Ducommun AeroStructures, or DAS, is a manufacturer of large, complex structural aerospace components and assemblies in aluminum, specialty alloys and composites for a wide variety of military and commercial aerospace applications, and has been manufacturing in Guaymas, Mexico since 2007.
The company, now in the midst of long-term contracts to provide final aircraft assembly and painting of spoilers for Boeing Next Generation 737’s and tail cone and fuselage doors on Embraer Legacy 450 and 500 executive jets, is based at The Offshore Group’s Roca Fuerte Industrial Park.
DAS is a subsidiary of Ducommun Inc., which provides engineering, manufacturing services and aerospace components to the commercial aircraft assembly and defense industries. The company is a supplier of critical components and assemblies for commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and missile and space programs through DAS, Ducommun Technologies, or DTI, and Miltec.
Work on the 737 project is split among DAS’s Monrovia, Gardena and Orange, California facilities and its Mexico manufacturing location. Specifically, Ducommun AeroStructures is furnishing empennage vertical and horizontal fin tip aerospace component assemblies for the Boeing 777, with the first set of tip assemblies to be delivered during the first quarter of 2011. Production of specialty alloys at the plant includes titanium and metal bond.
Work Embraer aircraft assembly, with a portfolio of six models whose range is from 2,300 to 3,000 nautical miles, combines Ducommun’s established manufacturing expertise with its design engineering capabilities.
Ducommun AeroStructures is the largest independent supplier of composite and metal bond structures and assemblies in the US, including aircraft wing spoilers, helicopter blades, flight control surfaces and engine components. Markets served include commercial aircraft, regional and business jet aircraft, military aircraft, commercial and military helicopters, and space launch vehicles.
Ducommun AeroStructures Mexico’s parent, founded in 1849, is the oldest company in California. It has played a key part in the birth and maturity of the aerospace industry in Southern California by providing aircraft aluminum aerospace components to companies such as Lockheed Martin.
The company designs, engineers and manufactures the largest, most complex contoured aero structure components in the aerospace industry. Its integrated processes include stretch-forming, thermal-forming, chemical milling, precision fabrication, machining, finishing processes, and integration of aircraft assembly components into subassemblies.
In addition, DAS now offer unique processes for making net-molded composite parts without ovens or autoclaves using a patented Foam Matrix Core System TM technology.
Ducommun is a leading technology company with design, development, manufacturing, integration, and test capabilities in the areas of aerospace components for missiles, space, sensor, simulations, complex electronic/mechanical assemblies, illuminated cockpit displays, RF systems and space qualified motion control devices.
