TV Azteca
Sergio Sarmiento is a syndicated newspaper
columnist whose articles are published in 22
Mexican newspapers, including Reforma in Mexico
City and El Norte in Monterrey. He is also a
television commentator.
He was born in Mexico City in 1953. He holds a
bachelor of arts with honors in philosophy and
linguistics from York University of Toronto,
Canada.
Mr Sarmiento began publishing professional
articles in newspapers and magazines at age 17.
In 1978, at 24, he was appointed editor-in-chief
of Encylopaedia Britannica Publishers, Inc., of
Latin America. He remained in this position for
17 years. During this time he edited the
Enciclopedia Hispánica, Lexipedia and other
dictionaries and encyclopedias. He also
contributed pieces and research for the
Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Britannica Book
of the Year.
In 1981, while still working for Encyclopaedia
Britannica Publishers, Mr. Sarmiento began a
political and economic column in the Mexican
daily El Financiero. In 1984 produced
commentaries for Grupo Radio Centro, a major
Mexican radio network. In 1993 he became a
commentator for TV Azteca, Mexico's second
largest television network. In 1994 he moved his
column to Reforma, Mexico's leading newspaper,
and began to syndicate it nationally. Mr.
Sarmiento has also written for The Wall Street
Journal, The Los Angeles Times and Le Monde of
France.
Between July 1995 and August 1998 Mr. Sarmiento
was vice-president for news operations of TV
Azteca. He is now vice-president of the
editorial committee.
Mr. Sarmiento is a recipient of the Juan Pablos
Award for Editorial Merit given by Mexico’s
National Chamber of Publishers. He has also been
made chevalier of the order of arts and letters
by the government of France. In 1999 ha was
awarded the José Pagés Llergo award for opinion
pieces.
